Around 28 people killed and more than 300 injured in Panchkula after the CBI court in the town of Panchkula announced the verdict in which Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan was found guilty of rape in a 15-year-old case against him.
Ram Rahim Singh was accused of raping two ‘sadhvis’ (female followers), in 2002 and the case came to trial in 2008.
The court will pronounce the quantum of sentence on 28 August.
The verdict was a big shocker to Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan’s followers and they started indulging in violence and torched several media and police vehicles.
Who is Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan ?
Born in Gurusar Modia, a small village of Rajasthan’s Sri Ganganagar district, in a Jaat-sikh family, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan, became the head of Sirsa based Dera Sacha Sauda in 1990.
The Dera Sacha Sauda sect claims to have some 50 million followers spreaded across the globe.
His twitter handle shows him as a Saint/Philanthropist/Versatile Singer/Allrounder Sportsperson/Film Director/Actor/Art Director/Music Director/ Writer/Lyricist.
Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan is also among the very few ‘VVIPs’ in the country who enjoy Z-Plus security.

Situation at Ground level :
Fearing an outbreak of violence, more than 15,000 Indian police and paramilitary soldiers were patrolling the streets.
Punjab Govt has asked Central Govt for more security forces in view of violence at different places.
Section 144 imposed in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar and Baghpat, in view of violent protests in Punjab and Haryana. Section 144 has also been imposed in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Delhi and some other northern states.
More than 1,000 Dera Sacha Sauda followers have been detained in Panchkula.
All trains from Delhi to Rohtak will remain cancelled due to Law and Order situation in Haryana, states Northern Railway.
Punjab Haryana High Court has also ordered attachment of property of Gurmeet Ram Rahim to compensate for the damage caused by his supporters.
Sriganganagar Labor Court was also torched by Dera supporters.
Barnala, Punjab – Telephone exchange also set ablaze. Curfew imposed in Sangrur and Abohar.
